SCDSB Presents Dearness Conservation Program, 1st. Inservice, Year 6

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board will be presenting the first In-service of Year 6 for new Dearness Conservation (DC)Teachers on Friday, October 13, 2006 from (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) and (12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Catholic Education Centre, 165A D’Youville Street, Sudbury.

The day’s agenda will include an overview of the big picture regarding the global need to influence attitudes and behaviours on climate change, a report on the Efficient Sudbury Campaign, How To Take a Webinar, and an overview of the Dearness Conservation Program.

Dearness Conservation is a multi-year program designed for school boards to improve their energy use, water consumption and waste management practices. A co-operative team of students, teachers, principals and custodians work together with DC to help schools conserve resources and protect the environment.

Marymount Academy Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The 50th. Anniversary Celebrations at Marymount Academy will begin this month with the official kick off on Sunday, October 15, 2006 with a Eucharistic Celebration at 10:00 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Mass will be followed by a light brunch in the school’s cafeteria.

On October 14, 2006 there will be an Open House at the school from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. where alumni students and teachers can visit the building and reminisce. During the evening, the alumni will gather for their formal reunion dinner.

In June of 2007, as the school year draws to a close, a celebration will be held for the current members of the Marymount family; staff, students, teachers, board employees and trustees who will come together to celebrate 50 Years of Excellence!

St. Mary School Makes Thanksgiving Soup

Students are St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol will be tasting their own delicious homemade Thanksgiving Day Soup later this week. Every child was asked to bring in one kind of vegetable to contribute to the Soup Pot. The kindergarten classes were asked for a yellow vegetable, while other classes brought in potatoes, along with green and orange vegetables.

Teachers and parents have been hard at work preparing the aromatic soup. Parents are welcome to join the staff and students as they celebrate with a Thanksgiving Ceremony Assembly on Thursday afternoon where Prayers, Poems and Songs will be shared. Thanksgiving Mass will be celebrated Friday morning at Our Lady of Peace Church.

SCDSB Celebrates Faith Day, “United in Faith: Serving in the Spirit”

Msgr. Dennis Murphy, (a celebrant and keynote speaker) was in Sudbury recently to address more than 400 teachers, principals, vice-principals and staff at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Faith Day activities held at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.

Msgr. Murphy spoke about the challenges facing Catholic educators today. In his presentation, he stressed the fact that the ministry of education in the Catholic school system is rooted in Faith and responding to the call of the Spirit empowers teachers, parents, students and staff to meet numerous challenges. Msgr. Murphy also pointed out that each person in the system must find his/her own path to spirituality in order to lead students to an experience of God, Jesus and the Spirit.

During the afternoon, teachers went back to their schools with questions for discussion with the purpose of developing an approach to spirituality in schools that could assist students grow in Faith and serve in the Spirit.

St. Charles College Kicks Off Annual Food Drive

St. Charles College has once again kicked off its annual food drive for 2006. Inco and Atlas Copco have partnered with St. Charles College in a collective effort to supply food for the Sudbury Food Bank.

The 2006 “Can We Fill It Campaign” challenges the students of St. Charles College, and the greater community to fill the 53-foot Atlas Copco “Powered by Commitment” tractor trailer with non-perishable food items. The campaign runs until October 6, 2006 at Market Square, where St. Charles College food items will be brought in by tractor trailer.

SCDSB to Hold Faith Day September 29

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board will be holding a
Faith Day Celebration Friday, September 29, 2006 at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. The day’s activities will commence at 8:30 a.m. and will end at 12:00 p.m. The theme for the Faith Day will focus on “United in Faith: Serving in the Spirit”.

Student Representatives on Board of Trustees

T.J. Pugliese a Grade 11 student at St. Charles College and Steve Masse, a Grade 12 student at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School were sworn in as Student Representatives by Sudbury Catholic District School Board Trustees at a regular meeting of the Board on September 19, 2006. Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board congratulated the students on assuming the position of Student Representatives on the Board of Trustees and the responsibility that it entails.

Steve Masse will assume the role as Student Representative for the 2006-2007 school year while T.J. Pugliese will be the designated Student Representative Elect. Students from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s four secondary schools will rotate through the position of Student Representative and Student Representative Elect with the latter learning from the former before assuming the role of Student Representative.

The students will act as ambassadors for their schools and will play an integral role in bringing the concerns and issues of their peers to the forum of the SCDSB Board meetings. Meetings of the Board are held on the first and third Tuesday of every month at the Catholic Education Centre and are open to the public.
