St. James Catholic School Hosts “Valentines for Vets”

Each year, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) invites schools from across Canada to craft and design valentines for the Valentines for Vets program. Valentines are sent to VAC’s Head Office in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where they are sorted and repackaged for distribution to Veterans in long-term facilities across the country in time for Valentines Day. The entire student body at St. James Catholic School will create Valentine cards, poems, letters and drawings to be forwarded to VAC.

The St. James Catholic School Valentines for Vets school endeavour will take place Friday, January 26, 2007 throughout the day in each classroom.

St. Anne Celebrates Family Literacy Day

St. Anne School is gearing up for ABC CANADA Family Literacy Day® (FLD). The school wants to promote the importance of reading and learning as a family activity. On January 26th, Grandparents are invited to the school to read with students and enjoy a cup of tea. This has become an annual event. St. Anne School also begun a ‘Reading Book Worm’ and will have him grow around the school by encouraging students to read. Parents visiting the school will be able to see the great enthusiasm that students have for reading.

Pius XII Catholic School Students Fit for the Challenge

Pius XII Catholic School is the winner of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s 2005-2006 Fitness Challenge. The goal of the program is to lower the resting and exercise heart rates of the Board’s students over the course of the school year.

Staff and students in the Junior Division participated in this program under the supervision of Mr. John Tarini, Coordinator of the Fitness Challenge for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. The heart rates were measured three times during the 2005-2006 school year.

Students from Pius XII Catholic School received a plaque and a small token of appreciation from Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Chairperson, Mrs. Paula Peroni during a recent board meeting for winning the Fitness Challenge.

St. Paul Catholic School Celebrates “International Literacy Day”

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be celebrating International Literacy Day on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the school by hosting a Happy Seussday! Seuss-based activities will take place in the morning while parents and other community partners have been invited to the school to read Dr. Seuss books to students in the afternoon.

Jean McHarg, Academic Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board along with staff from the Greater Sudbury Public Library will also participate in Literacy Day festivities. There may even be a few Cat in the Hat characters floating around that day!

St. Raphael Catholic School Hosts Book Drive to Support Aboriginal Communities

St. Raphael Catholic School has been conducting a book drive to support children and teens living in isolated Aboriginal Communities. The idea for the book drive which began on January 15, 2007 came from James Bartleman, Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor in an attempt to establish libraries with adequate resources and to promote the value of reading in remote areas.

A mass appeal went out to the families and students of St. Raphael Catholic School with an overwhelming response from the community. The St. Raphael Student Council under the direction of Mrs. Barbeau have taken on the job of collecting and packing the books which will be shipped from the school at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 26, 2007.

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School to Host Open House and Information Night

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School will be hosting an Open House and Information Night on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Presentations throughout the evening will focus on the programs offered at Bishop Alexander Carter, with special emphasis on the French Immersion Program, new Technological Courses, Pathways For Success Program and co-operative education. All the classrooms will be open for public viewing. McCarthy’s will also be on site with uniform samples.

Staff and student representatives will be on hand to answer any questions.

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School to Host Open House and Information Night

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School will be hosting an
Open House and Information Night, Thursday, February 8, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium located at 2993 Algonquin Road in Sudbury.

Presentations will take place in the gym followed by classroom visits and activities.

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School to Host ‘Technology Days’

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School will be hosting ‘Technology Days’ on Wednesday, January 17 and Thursday, January 18, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the school located at 2993 Algonquin Road, Sudbury.

The days’ activities will involve four one-hour sessions:

• Automotive Technology session: Students will be given an overview of the program followed by a hands on team competition task

• Construction Technology session: Students will use power tools to produce a finished product

• Hospitality and Tourism session: Working in the Foods Lab students will make pasta which they will also enjoy eating.

• Communications Technology session: Using digital cameras students will plan and record scenes of “A Day at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.”
