“Me to We – Youth in Action” Award Winner visits St. David’s Students to talk about preserving water!

St. David Catholic Elementary School was greeted by “Me to We – Youth in Action” award winner, Autumn Peltier, from Wikwemikong First Nation who visited the Native Language class students.

She and her mother Stephanie talked about her travels around Mother Earth fighting for water, including representing Canada in the Children’s Climate Conference in Sweden, meeting our Prime Minister, and kicking off this year’s Water Walk.
The group then sang Water Song and offered tobacco to the School’s brook, which was named after Autumn. Students enjoyed the discussion and activities and can’t wait until their new friends visit again!

Walking Together in Hope with Seuss

Students in 8A at St. Charles College took part in a very active reader’s theatre lesson today. Building on the Catholic Education Week theme of “Walking Together in Hope” the students read through Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”

Mrs. Kathy Belanger was the narrator. One student, Ethan, took on the role of teacher. Josh Valcourt-Gagnon took on the role of book holder and picture displayer and all the other students took part in the actions for the words being read.

St. Benedict students celebrate Catholic Education Week with artwork!

St. Benedict students completed artwork based on the one of the sub-themes of Catholic Education Week. Each group brainstormed what that theme meant and how it could be applied to our lives in the year 2017. We then gave each group a large piece of mural paper and had them visually represent their understanding of their theme. There was very little teacher input, and the Grade 8 students as what their theme meant to them and their lives.

Pius XII students host Math Morning for families

This Catholic Education Week, Pius XII School hosted a Math Morning for students and their families to encourage Growth Mindset in mathematics. One of the school’s main focuses this year is developing a positive attitude towards math. As part of this goal we continue to put emphasis on the relationship between educators, students and their families. Pius XII School works closely with families because when there is a trusting, respectful relationship between the home and school, students have a better chance of being successful academically, socially and emotionally.

During the math morning, all parents and family members played fun, educational math games at school the with their children and were then given a math bag to take home. The math bag was filled with dice, cards and math game instructions to use at home to support their children to build confidence in math.

Bishop Carter Alexander hosts Health and Wellness Day for students

Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S hosted it’s second annual Health and Wellness Day on Thursday May 4th 2017. The day was organized to help give students several different options on how to deal with stress and become more physically active. The day was divided to give each grade two classroom sessions along with two active sessions throughout the day. Lunch was prepared by students and staff for all participants. A nice warm bowl of soup along with greek salad and either egg or chicken salad sandwiches definitely added to the event and the promotion of healthy eating. The event concluded with a great motivational speech by author Connor LaRocque.

The class joined Reading Town Sudbury and the Greater Sudbury Public Library for the event. Each student received a free copy of Small Saul by Canadian author, Ashley Spires.

They thoroughly enjoyed the read aloud and look forward to delving deeper into the life lessons the book shares. Here are the students, showing their favourite part of the story. They are so excited to own these new books and to house them in their classroom book boxes for a little while before bringing them home to share with family.

Bishop Alexander Carter students help clean-up the community for Catholic Education Week

On May 3rd, 2017, students at B.A.C.C.S.S. participated in a neighbourhood clean-up. Stewardship of the environment is a very important Catholic Social Teaching which it is re-enforced every year during Catholic Education Week. The students had fun bonding with friends, while enjoying some fresh air and exercise. The neighbourhood clean-up not only provides an opportunity to strengthen community relations, but instills a sense of pride and ownership in the students with regard to environmental responsibiity. Dozens of garbage bags were filled and a good time was had by all!
