October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month across the province. Students at St. Francis School wore blue to raise awareness that students learn differently. An increased awareness of learning disabilities can reduce the stigma and make it easier for learners to access the support they need. Chris Doucette from LDAS visited students in grades 5 and 6 for a presentation entitled, LD 101. The presentation outlined how we are all different, we all learn differently and we all have different needs. Staff, students and community guests attended a mass with Father Larry in the afternoon where the event was also recognized. The special occasion wrapped up with some students planting small blue flags in the school’s flower garden in recognition of people in the Sudbury community who have learning disabilities. Ms. Graziella Visentin, the school’s resource teacher and member of LDAS, was thrilled with the students’ participation and success of the day’s events.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Take part in Orange Shirt Day!
Staff and students showed their commitment for reconciliation by participating in Orange Shirt Day! Many schools took part in the day by wearing orange shirts and pins, as well as educating their fellow peers on residential schools and honour those who are no longer with us.
Orange Shirt Day started in British Columbia in 2013 to commemorate Phyllis’ story. Phyllis had her orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at a residential school. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools. The date signifies anti-bullying and anti-racism.

The St. James School Council would like to thank Boston Pizza for the opportunity to participate in their “Celebrity Server Night”. Hockey celebrity, Tyler Bertuzzi was on hand to greet everyone. Proceeds from the event are earmarked for the School Council’s school yard improvement project. Totals from the school fundraising efforts have now passed $10,000 and the school council is looking to build on that success. If you are interested in receiving more information about this project, please do not hesitate to contact us at St James School.
“Every Child Matters” at St. David Catholic School
The Native Language students at St. David Catholic School embarked on a campaign of education. Students promoted and educated their peers on “Orange Shirt Day”. This day of remembrance was started by Phyllis Webstad. Ms. Wedstad wore an orange shirt on her first day at residential school when she was six years old. When the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation student arrived at the school, her shirt was removed and taken away.
Webstad began her annual Orange Shirt campaign in 2013 and has since shared her story with thousands of Canadians. St. David School was proud to participate in celebrating the resilience of the families impacted by the residential school system.

St. David Catholic School Takes Advantage of the Warm Weather and Brings Reading Instruction Outdoors
St. David Catholic School has embraced the unusually warm weather by bringing classroom instruction outside. Classroom teacher, Terri-Lynn Lepage believes that “children benefit from being outside not only for physical activity, but also to enjoy the trees, rocks and the natural beauty that surrounds us. When we are outside completing academic work, the students are more focused and are able to work independently. They enjoy being outside of the classroom and are learning to appreciate nature as an extension of our classroom”.
St. David School was fortunate to access a 2016 TD Friends of the Environment Grant to create an outdoor learning space in nestled in nature. The newly build learning environment is regularly used by classes to promote experiential learning opportunities for students from the full day kindergarten program to grade 6.
