St. Benedict Pow wow educates locals and internationals alike

Thanks to great weather, the educational pow wow at St. Benedict went off without a hitch Wednesday, May 9, 2018.

The detailed and colourful regalia stayed dry and there were hundreds of students who were able to walk away from the experience learning something about traditions and Indigenous culture.

The pow wow was partially funded by a Speak Up grant from the Ministry of Education in the area of Opening Doors for Indigenous Conversations.

Laura Kuzenko, Principal of St. Benedict Catholic School says the grant was successful to ensure that more than 450 visitors from within the board and within other boards learned the traditions and spiritual meaning behind such an important cultural solstice event.

“We have a number of international students at our school who would have experienced a pow wow for the first time and yet we have many Canadian nationals who were here for the first time as well to learn together.”

Lunch was also served to the visitors which included traditional Indian tacos.

Secondary Students Dominate at Skills Ontario Competition

Sudbury Catholic Schools was well represented in this year’s Skills Ontario Competition. Listed below are the students who participated in this year’s events:

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School:

– Cameron Howe and Carter Poirier (Carpentry team of 2) mentored by teacher John Doyon
– Aivan Apan (Culinary Arts) mentored by Mike Sipos.

St. Charles College:

– Anthony Sherrington (Automotive Service Technician) mentored by William Duncan.

We are happy to announce that St. Benedict’s Cameron Howe and Carter Poirier are bringing back a Gold medal in the Carpentry team of 2 competition. Under the supervision of teacher John Doyon, Cameron Howe and Carter Poirier have taken top podium at the 2018 Skills Ontario Competitions.

Congratulations to all involved in making this opportunity available to our students. A special mention to Cambrian College for creating excitement around “Team Sudbury participants” at this event.

Students participate in Catholic Youth Day during Catholic Education Week

Sudbury Catholic Students were present during the Catholic Youth Day held in Toronto on May 8 to celebrate Catholic Education Week. The celebration began with a Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Basilica with His Excellency Bishop G. Bergie. After Mass, students and other guests were guided to the WE Global Learning Centre and enjoyed a day of presentations by individuals representing Catholic Education leadership in Ontario as well as those from the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and the WE organization. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left the day feeling inspired! They hope to bring back what they’ve learned to better assist their peers within their respective schools.

St. James School Hosts Math Fair for Grade 4 and 5 Students!

Mrs McHugh’s grade 4-5 class hosted a “Math Fair” at St James School on May 8, 2018. Based on Todd Nesloney’s #kidsdeserveit: the gr 4-5 students chose something they’re passionate about and created a 2-3 minute presentation over at least 6 ways of how math works within that passion. Projects were displayed in the gym and featured Subway sandwiches, dirt bikes, hockey, dancing, swimming, vending machines, figure skating, video games, basketball, transportation, smoothies, fishing, baseball, rainbows and slime. Who knew that math is a big part of all those things!?! Students were very proud to share their mathematical knowledge with all their friends and our guests today. They also realized through these projects that math is a big part of everything around them. #CatholicEdWk

Holy Trinity School Holds Special Mass to Honour Catholic Education Week

Holy Trinity School gathered as a community to participate in a Catholic Education Week Mass. Together, they listened to Father Sam speak about the promises that we make to God.Thank you to Mr. Gauthier’s Grade 5/6 class who led us in todays celebration.Thank you for Ms. Skelly and Ms. Hoeg’s students who led us in song. As well as our School Superintendent Ms. Bedard, and Mrs. Henry who led us in song. Students also created hearts and promises to God that decorated the main gym as well as the large cross on the wall.

St. David hosts Children’s Mental Health Week Proclamation!

As part of Catholic Education Week, St. David Catholic Elementary School helped proclaim Children’s Mental Health Week alongside Child and Family Centre. The theme of this year’s week is getting back to nature. To demonstrate the importance of this, the group participated in Medicine Wheel teachings and completed a nature walk.
