Sudbury Catholic District School Board

GSPS Media Release – St. Charles College

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is working in collaboration with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and St. Charles College to address the recent concerns of a supposed threat at the school today, Thursday, March 29, 2018. The supposed threat circulating social media was in relation to a “kill list” and potential shooting in the school during mass.

We would like to take the opportunity to address some of the speculation that has been posted on social media and hopefully reassure staff, students and parents. The Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board take these types of matters very seriously and Officers have been investigating the matter in order to determine its validity.

No physical evidence of a “kill list” was ever located by school administration.

Officers attended the residence of the young man and spoke with him and his guardian. The young man and his guardian indicated that he does not have access to a firearm. The young man also indicated that he was unaware of the recent social media activity surrounding him. He stated that he had no intention of attending St. Charles College today and that he had no intention of shooting anyone.

There will be a Police presence at St. Charles College throughout the day today as a precaution and in order to ensure that staff and students feel safe.

St. Charles School hosts successful families math night!

On Thursday, March 22 2018 St. Charles Elementary hosted a Math Night for their FDK and Grade 1 families. Parents and students visited five different stations where they engaged in activities focused on supporting the development of number sense and spatial reasoning skills. Each activity promoted the use of a model or manipulative to help visualize and represent thinking. To continue the learning at home, students left with an activity bag from every station, thanks to funding provided through the Ministry’s Parent Reaching Out Grant. A great time was had by all who attended!

STEM at St. Benedict: Making Molecules out of Jube Jubes

Chemistry (elements, compounds, and atoms) can often be a tricky concept but not when you have jube jubes to help you along. Students in grade 9 Science at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School have been using the sweet stuff to demonstrate chemical bonding.

Grade 9 Science teachers Ms. Loretta Cuda and Ms. Tessa Jewell feel that the learning has become more solidified and that bringing manipulatives into the science classroom reinforces and allows students the opportunity to visualize and understand concepts.

The two teachers have started a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) club at the school. So far this year, the STEM students have looked at environmental projects in the Sudbury area as well as competed in the PEO bridge building competition held at Dynamic Earth.

Upcoming events include the Living Wall competition presented by Clean Air Sudbury, Science North, and supported by Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations. In addition, students will be building and testing catapults, roller-coaster, lunar landers, and Tomatosphere in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency, HeinzSeeds, Let’s Talk Science, and the University of Guelph, just to name a few.

Welcome to the CARDINAL CLOSET!

The CARDINAL CLOSET is a new initiative at St. Charles College which aims to provide supports for our Cards student community. The mission of the closet is Cards helping Cards by providing students in need with clothing, food, toiletries and school supplies. There is in-style clothing for teens that they will feel confident wearing, food items to take home and basic toiletries as well. The student will access the closet with a trusted staff member and “shop” for themselves.

The idea was brought forth by a staff member who recognized the needs we have within our school. In partnership with the Comprehensive program, the students began to imagine what they could do to make this idea a reality. The Comprehensive students began this project with a tired, old room and a vision. Together, with their educational assistants, Christina Gallagher and Nancy Oliveira, they transformed the space into an inviting, bright and organized “closet”. Students chose paint colours, painted the entire space, sorted and laundered the donated clothing and shopped for and organized the toiletry and pantry items. It is with great pride that they announce that the Cardinal Closet is open. The Comprehensive students, will work in the space, restock items etc. and continue to gain essential workplace skills.
