St. David School families celebrate International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8 at St. David Catholic School with a special acknowledgement to women in the building who nurture and support students and their families. Grade 1 student, M’Komii-Nodin Morin and his family gifted his teacher and female staff members with flowers on this day. His family acknowledged the support and encouragement that staff members share with the children in the school.

International Women’s Day is an annual international day of recognition of women who paved the way for those to follow. This day of recognition started in the early 1900’s and continues today. The day is about unity, support and encouragement in a global context.

Ash Wednesday celebrated at St. David Catholic School

St. David Catholic School held an Ash Wednesday celebration to mark the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time when Catholics prepare for Easter by fasting, repentance and moderation. In the Old Testament, people used ashes as a sign of repentance.

The students and staff of St. David Catholic School spoke about how to better walk with God in practical terms. This means being kind to each other and supporting each other in times of need. According to the school vice principal, Mr. Colin Lapalme, “As a school community, it is beautiful when we can come together and celebrate our faith”.

Grade 4’s and 5’s Winter Carnival Fun at Holy Cross

Two classes of Grade 4 and 5 students enjoyed indoor and outdoor cooperative games on Winter Carnival Day! They played Chuck the Chicken, Snowball Relay, Snowball Race, Polar Bear Polar Bear Cross My Iceberg, and many others. They had loads of fun being active and enjoying the beautiful outdoors!

Grade 1 & 2 students enjoy Holy Cross winter carnival

All Grade 1 and 2 students at Holy Cross enjoyed Winter Carnival activities at Robinson Park. Fun was had by all. The children enjoyed a morning of sliding, skating and snow soccer. They were treated to hot chocolate, provided by “Salute” and all the rinks were cleared, floated and cleared once again that very morning, at the early hours of 5:30 AM by one of our student’s grandfather. (Many thanks go out to Dawson’s grandparents for all their efforts to make this day so successful).

St. Benedict students complete placement at food bank

As part of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School’s commitment to meeting the needs of all, Senior ASD and Life Skills students participated in a co-op style placement at the Food Bank last semester. After completing health and safety training and workshops on appropriate work habits, the students visited the Food Bank on a weekly basis to package fresh fruit and vegetables that had been generously donated by Costco Sudbury. They learned the importance of teamwork, time management and gained many valuable skills which will help them transition to the workplace.

The Sudbury Food Bank feeds over 13,000 people each month and is run mostly by volunteers. St. Benedict students were proud to be part of this worthwhile organization and the school looks forward to continuing this partnership in the future. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the warehouse located at 1105 Webbwood Drive, Sudbury from Monday to Friday during regular business hours. Cheques, credit card and cash donations are also welcome.

Local Elder Shares First Nation Culture at St. David School

Students and staff at St. David Catholic School leaned about how traditional First Nation hand drumming represents the heartbeat of mother earth. Elder, teacher, and musician, Verna Hardwick, spent the afternoon with various classes at St. David School teaching students about the importance of the drum in Indigenous cultures. Students learned new songs and had the opportunity to participate in a drumming circle. “It was a beautiful experience not only for my students, but also for myself. Mrs. Hardwick was a wonderful teacher. She encouraged the students to build their self confidence by singing and drumming proudly. She also shared traditional teachings, some Ojibwe words and phrases and most importantly stressed the importance of respect with the students and participants”, stated grade 3/4 teacher Ginny Long.

Shrove Tuesday and math learning

The St. Francis school community celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) with mathematics this morning. Parents, grandparents and friends came and had a pancake breakfast with guest speaker, Krista Sarmatiuk, SCDSB Math Facilitator, followed by an hour of math games in their child’s class. Part of the conversation focused on how parents can be a solution at home using everyday authentic math and building positive mindsets. Thanks to all those who came out!
