Staff and students alike showed their Irish and school spirit by wearing green on Monday, March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Charles College Takes the Title at the Fourth Annual Sudbury Catholic Winter Adventure Race
This is the fourth year that the Winter Adventure Race has been held at the Killarney Shebanoning Outdoor Environment Education Centre (K.S.O.E.E.C).
St. Charles College competed againstt the other board high schools – St. Benedict’s, Bishop Alexander and Marymount to take the title.
The three part race consists of running, target shooting and an orienteering exercise.
The group won the race in 1 hour and 13 minutes. They were 6 minutes ahead of the next team to cross the finish line.
Celebrating a Hundred Days at St. Andrew
Students in the primary wing of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School had a full day of 100 day activities on February 10th. The students in teacher Shannon. Meyer’s SK/1 class created self portraits of themselves as 100 year olds. Pictured is Mason Walker from SK with his self portrait.
Crunch Time at SCC!
Almost one thousand students at St. Charles College bit down on their apples – on the last day of school heading into March break.
At ten o’clock the students created a collective crunch to celebrate Nutrition month in Ontario.
The event is celebrated each March with fruits and vegetables like broccoli and celery and it is organized by the head of the school breakfast club, teacher Elizabeth Szilva.
Making sacrifices on Ash Wednesday
As part of the Ash Wednesday service at St. Charles College, the students’ FIRST robotics team presented a cheque to Deacon Steve. The cheque in the amount of four hundred dollars will be used to support Chalice, a Catholic organization that supports children in Third World countries.
Every year, the school aims to financially support a handful of children in places like Haiti, Bolivia and Africa. Throughout the Lenten season, the students take up a collection in their homerooms. These students created a business plan that involved getting community sponsorship. Werner Scherzinger, who heads up the group says “we wanted to support children who have nothing and want very little.”
Marymount Alpine Skiing – It’s a 4-Peat and an OFSAA 5th!!!
On Wednesday, February 12th the Marymount Alpine Ski Team successfully defended last year’s title as Level 1 NOSSA Girls’ Champions and won the Northern Ontario Championships for the 4th year in a row.
Competition was extremely close this year and the skiers were challenged with an extremely difficult slalom course in the morning. Ultimately, this provided excellent race experience for five skiers who represented the NOSSA Champs at OFSAA. Danielle Burla, Katherine Boyce, Toni Teale, Carissa Roy, and Marika Moskalyk travelled to Blue Mountain in Collingwood along with a contingency of skiers from a few other schools from Sudbury to represent the Northern Ontario District at OFSAA.
On Day 1 of competition, Marymount jumped out of the gate and tackled a long, challenging slalom course. Danielle Burla finished in 12th place overall while Katherine Boyce finished in 14th overall, which included a second run that was the 6th fastest time on the course for the day. Along with the remaining team results combined, the outstanding racing helped earn Marymount a 5th place overall finish as a team. Absolutely unbelievable!! Equally impressive on Day 2 was Danielle Burla’s two Giant Slalom runs. Danielle finished in 9th place overall among the whole group of Level 1 Girls’ racers.
Congratulations is extended to the whole Marymount Alpine Team on their incredible accomplishments once again this year. These girls have created memories that will surely last a lifetime!
BAC Partners with Crime Stoppers
The staff and students at Bishop Alexander Carter partnered with the Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers and held a “Jail and Bail”. Students paid money to vote for teachers and administrators they would like to see put in jail. The staff who was put in jail then had to compete in a variety of activities such as sumo wrestling, hula hoop contest and a dance off.
Only the winners of each competition were released from the jail that was constructed and put in the gymnasium. In the end, the president of the student council, Michaela Donnelly-Perras had to compete with the Principal, Mrs. MacGregor in a dance competition. They brought all their “moves” to the dance floor and Mrs. MacGregor sneaked out with the win.
The students raised $500 for Crime Stoppers. Way to go Gators!
