Corpus Christi Wins Cardinals Classic

Some twelve teams from the Rainbow District School Board and Sudbury Catholic Schools took part in the annual Cardinals’ Classic held at St. Charles College over this past weekend.

After more than twenty games, Corpus Christi, (Sudbury Catholic Schools) faced the Carl Nesbitt Nitros (Rainbow District School Board) in the championship final. Corpus led 17-11 at the half but Carl Nesbitt came on strong in the third quarter. Corpus Christi stayed true to their game plan and managed to hold on for the win, defeating their opponents 32-25.

Connor Vanhe Weghe led all scorers with 6 points with teammate Chris Cecile scoring a three pointer. Other members of the championship team were; Garrett Natale, Kathleen Bertuzzi, Cassie Crocco, Alana Valle, Kaithlyn Zandarin, Alyssa Gierrofelice, Sarah Cholewinsky, Alex Bussoloro, Paolo Scola, Dawson Qudil and Jacob Hanson. Mr. Gallien and Mr. Natale coached the Corpus Christi team.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Celebrate Holy Week

On Holy Thursday, all Sudbury Catholic District School Board Principals were presented with a copy of the painting, The Feast, by First Nation’s artist Leland Bell.

The painting depicts the Last Supper and embraces Aboriginal Culture and Catholic Spirituality. The visual supports the Board’s commitment to inclusive education in all Sudbury Catholic Schools. The presentation was made during the Joan Green, Leadership Workshop held at the Howard Johnson Hotel. Joan is a renowned educator and motivational speaker.

St. Mary Catholic School Student Overall Bridge Builder

A St. Mary Catholic School Student was the recent winner of the PEO Bridge Building Competition held during National Engineering Week. The Sudbury Chapter of Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) held the 13th Annual PEO Bridge Building Competition at Council Chambers at Tom Davies Square for both elementary and secondary students.

Students had to construct a bridge from a kit containing only six balsa wood strips (36″ x 1/4″ x 1/4″) and one bottle of Elmers™ School Glue. Specific construction criteria had to be followed for the bridge building. Bridges were tested to failure in the “Bridge Crusher” which recorded the maximum load carried. Nicole Pinto-Ponce, from St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol was the overall winner in the competition. Nicole placed first in the Elementary division with an outstanding score of 213.2 points.
Her bridge held a load of 143 pounds!

Other members of the St. Mary Catholic School Team included Carli Meeks and Megan O’Link who placed 5th with a load of 30.5 pounds, Davey Meeks and Meagan Larocque who placed 12th with a load of 19.7 pounds, and Daniel Moxam who placed 21st with a load of 15.2 pounds. Nicole was presented with a trophy, which will stay at St. Mary Catholic School until next year’s competition.

St. Mary Catholic School Students to Appear on CBC’s Easter Seals this Sunday

St. Mary Catholic School participated this school year in the Nickels for the North campaign, presented by VALE INCO and the Easter Seals Society. The Grade 5/6 class was awarded a pizza party and now has the opportunity to participate in the nationally televised CBC Easter Seals Telethon on Sunday April 5, 2009 at the E-Dome at Cambrian College. Be sure to watch for them about 10:30 a.m. this Sunday.
