Sudbury Catholic Board Recognized By United Way

Michael Cullen, Campaign Director for the United Way / Centraide presents Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board with an Award of Recognition for the Board’s ongoing support for the United Way Campaign. For many years, the Board’s students and staff have continued to donate their time and efforts to raise funds for the United Way through events at individual schools and through the Payroll Deduction Plan.

The SCDSB and its family of schools have raised more than $6,500 for this year’s United Way / Centraide campaign.

The United Way / Centraide, together with its many volunteers and donors such as the Sudbury Catholic District School Board strives to build a healtheir and stronger community.

St. David Students Spread Valentine Cheer on 100th Day of School

Grade 1 students at St. David Catholic School will be making 100 Valentines today to be given to the residents at Pioneer Manor. The class project celebrates the 100th day at school and brings some cheer to the residents as they have not been able to have visitors due to the flu outbreak.

SCDSB Chairperson’s Award 2006-2007

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board believes in the importance of recognizing individual(s) or group(s) who make outstanding contributions to our Catholic school system.
In honour of these contributions, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is now accepting registrations for the SCDSB Chairperson’s Award for 2006-2007.

If you are aware of an individual(s) or group(s) that you feel should be recognized for their outstanding contributions to Catholic Education please take a moment to complete the nomination form and fax it to the attention of Regan Corelli at (705)688-1781 by March 31, 2007.

Pius XII Catholic School Students Looking a Little Green

The students of Pius XII Catholic School are keen and green in keeping the planet, the environment and the school clean by undertaking major recycling efforts. “Our students believe the recycling is fun and it means they have to use their imagination in developing their ‘Al the Can Man’ projects,” states the school’s Vice-Principal, Carmela Pitman.

Students decorated a pop can or bottle using recyclable materials. They received certificates and recognition for their efforts in recycling, reducing and reusing.

Girls vs Boys Hockey Game Brings Famous Wolves to Bishop Carter

Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School students attended a Girl’s Against the Boy’s Hockey Game at the Centennial arena in Hanmer as a fundraiser for the school’s athletic department recently.

Students from Bishop Carter’s feeder schools as well as a number of Sudbury Wolves players also participated in the event. The highlight of the evening took place when the students from the feeder schools were actually given the opportunity to play in the game.

It was a highly spirited and eventful day for many Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School students and staff in the area of Valley East. All of the Bishop Carter athletes were appreciated and given honourable mention. The well planned event also gave Grade 8 students the opportunity to see what high school life can be like.

St. Francis JK Open House to be Held February 13

St. Francis Catholic Elementary School is holding an Open House on Tuesday February 13, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for parents of children registering in JK for September 2007. Families will see the school, meet the Kindergarten teachers, discuss school programs and register for Junior Kindergarten. See you there!

SCDSB Staff Invited to Participate in Group Discussion on Catholic Education in Ontario

Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education and Tony Chezzi, Adult Faith Animator for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board invite SCDSB staff to participate in a group discussion on Catholic Education in Ontario and the important issues it is facing today.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at Marymount Academy starting at 7:00 p.m..

St. Benedict Hosts the Bears Classic Elementary Basketball Tournament

Over the weekend of January 19th and 20th, a 16 team boy’s tournament was hosted by St. Benedict School. The final game of the tournament saw defending champs Jesse Hamilton matched up againstt the St. Francis A squad. Although the Jaguars defeated the St. Francis Flames just 2 games before, the Flames were able to bounce back to win gold in the championship game.

A big thank you goes out to Franco Rocca at St. Benedict Secondary School for all of his hard work in organizing this tournament. His time and efforts were greatly appreciated. As, well a thank you goes out to all of the teachers/coaches who give so much of their time to the students during practices and tournaments.

St. Mark Students Recognized by Royal Canadian Legion

Congratulations to the students of St Mark Catholic School in Markstay for their excellent efforts in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day Literary Contest.

Mr. Robitaille and Heidi from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 presented the medals, certificates and prizes to the lucky winners on Wednesday, January 17, 2007.

The winners of the Remembrance Day Literary Contest of the Junior Essay, Grades 4, 5,& 6 were:

1st place – Lucreatia Frizell – won $ 25.00 and a gold medal

2nd place – Zachary Eden – won $15.00 and a silver medal

The winner of the Remembrance Day Literacy Contest of the Intermediate Poetry, Grade 7, 8 & 9 was;

3rd place – Mackenzie Vermette – won $10.00 and a bronze medal

The winner of the Remembrance Day Literacy Contest of the Intermediate Essay, Grades 7, 8,& 9 was;

3rd place – Jessica Daggett – won $10.00 and a bronze medal
