Flames-Bears Girls Basketball Tourny-Huge Sucess Despite Major Storm

Even though the recent winter snow storm played havoc with road
conditions and regularly scheduled events, it wasn’t a big deterrent to the girls’ basketball championships held at St. Benedict Catholic
Secondary School this past weekend. The twelve team tournament began
Friday night at St. Francis Catholic elementary school with games
continuing on Saturday, followed by the finals on Sunday.

As in other years, the medal rounds showcased excellent play, sportsmanship and spirit. This year was no exception. The St. David Dragons went down to defeat at the hands of the Marymount Regals 38-24 in the championship match. The score was tied for over half of the game, but in the end the Dragons simply ran out of steam.

Jessie Hamilton was awarded the Bronze medal over Felix Ricard, while R.L. Beattie defeated St. James to capture the Consolation championship. Special recognition was given to Christie Sitko from Jessie Hamilton for outstanding offense. Sitko was the top scorer of the tournament with eighteen points in one game. Top defensive player was Chelsea Wandziak of St. David, while Brittany
Michaud of Marymount was selected as tournament MVP.

Organizers Judi Way (St. Benedict) and Jean Gallien (St. Francis) would like to thank all players, coaches and fans for making this event a success and also the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for generously donating the plaques and medallions.
