Sudbury Catholic District School Board

Freedom of Information Process

What is the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (MFIPPA)?

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“MFIPPA”) is the privacy legislation that the Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) abides by when collecting, retaining, using, disclosing, and disposing of personal information. In addition to regulating the protection of an individual’s personal information within the SCDSB’s records, MFIPPA also deals with the right of access to these records, access procedures and exemption to the right of access.

Purpose of MFIPPA

The purpose of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) is to:

  • Provide the public with a right of access to information held by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB), based on these principles:
    • Information should generally be available to the public.
    • Any exemptions (such as personal information, third-party information, or solicitor-client privilege) should be limited and clearly defined.
    • Decisions about releasing information can be reviewed by an independent body, such as the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
  • Protect the privacy of individuals by ensuring that personal information held by the SCDSB is safeguarded and that individuals have the right to access their own personal information.

Correction of Personal Information

Students or parents/guardians have the right to request corrections if they believe personal information in a student record is inaccurate or outdated.

  • Under the Education Act:
A parent/guardian can ask the school principal to correct information in the student’s Ontario Student Record (OSR).
  • Under MFIPPA:
A written request must be sent to the SCDSB Freedom of Information and Privacy Office.
There is no fee to request a correction to your own personal information.

What is a Freedom of Information (FOI) Request?

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request is a formal request to access records or information held by the SCDSB under MFIPPA. Anyone can submit a request for information.
